Purchasing a new roof is not something that can not only be a necessity, but it is also an investment that requires some thought. The first thing you need to consider when you are looking to buy a new roof is what type of roof you want to purchase. You also have to weigh the pros and cons of each type of roofing material, which includes comparing the roof prices. An asphalt shingle roof is one of the more common roof types and will typically cost anywhere from $600 to $4,000 for the materials alone. A wood shingle roof is a bit more costly and can cost anywhere from $6,000 to $20,000, and it is not fire resistant.

A tile roof is another popular roofing option that can cost anywhere from $7,000 to $21,000. A tile roof not only looks good, but it is also fire resistant. A metal roof is a great choice if you are looking for a roof that is fire resistant and won’t rot. Typical metal roof prices are anywhere from $5,000 to $40,000, depending on the type of metal you choose. If you want to make your investment last, a slate roof is known for being long lasting. A slate roof can cost between $18,000 and $85,000.

Do You Want a Shingle or Metal Roof?

Making a roofing decision

When you are building a new home, one of the first questions that you may want to ask is; “Do I install a shingle or a metal roof?” This is a very important question for a couple of reasons. First of all, a metal roof will usually cost a bit more than a shingle roof, so there is the cost factor involved. The next thing has to do with the durability of the roof. A metal roof will hold up better, over time, than a shingle roof. A metal roof also requires less maintenance than a shingle roof which may require repairs after a storm.

What’s the weather like?

This leads us to a very important point. In some areas, a metal roof is practically mandatory, since a shingle roof would not hold up well in severe weather. For example, if you live in Florida, and are subject to sever tropical storms, you need to be very careful about the type of roof that you have on your home. A severe storm can easily damage a roof that was not designed for a tropical storm. But your contractor should be able to advise you on that particular point. They can tell you what roofing material is best for your roof.

Finding out the facts

In my own case, I knew that I was going to live in an area that didn’t really suffer from a lot of inclement weather. But I still wanted to know if  I could benefit from installing a metal roof. So I made sure to do some thorough research on the subject. Not only to I discuss the matter with several roofing contractors, but I read a number of articles on the subject after pulling up the material on the Internet. It was there that I got the information that I was looking for.

What about other benefits?

As it turns out, it can pay to have a more expensive metal roof installed. Part of the reason has to do with the fact that a metal roof is easy to maintain. You don’t have to keep replacing shingles over the years. A metal roof will stand up against a storm (the few that we have) and remain intact. This is why metal roofs are seen in places with sever weather, such as tropical island locations. Plus, a metal roof can come in a wide variety of designs and colors. It’s easy to find a metal roof that will fit your sense of style.

New Home Roofing Materials

Building a dream home?

I was in the process of building my dream home after having secured the financing through my bank. At this stage of the game, it was important that I get all of the details right. One of the first things that I needed to make a decision on was the type of roof that I wanted and the materials that the roof would be constructed of. There were a lot of things to choose from and I wanted to make sure that I got the most for my money. I also wanted to make sure that the new roof would protect the rest of my new home.

Talk to the neighbors

In order to proceed logically with this decision, I made a study of the climate and weather history of the location where I was building me house. I also made it a point to get some input from the neighbors and local building contractors. The main question that I had for everyone had to do with the best roofing materials that I could use for my home. Of course, I wanted to be economical, as well, but a poorly thought out roof is never an economical endeavor, since you’ll end up spending a lot in roof repairs.

What’s the final roofing decision?

In order to avoid this possibility, I asked questions regarding the type of roof that seemed to have the lowest  repair rates. The answers that I got were pretty much the same from everyone. Metal roofing materials scored number one on just about everyone’s list. The reason for this had to do with the fact that the area where i was building my house was subject to the occasional severe storm. Those who owned standard asphalt shingle roofs were constantly repairing them by buying new shingles and patching their roofs up. However, those who owned metal roofs didn’t have to do this.

What about slate roofs?

Not only that, but those who owned metal roofs didn’t have to spend much time worrying about maintenance and the other upkeep aspects of home roofs. You see, metal roofs are some of the most durable roofs available, ranking up here with slate roofing materials, but a lot less expensive.  The selection of colors when it comes to metal roofs is fantastic and I knew that I could compliment not only my own home, but the other homes in my neighborhood – much to the delight of my neighbors, I’m sure. So I ended up getting a metal roof for my home.

Roof Repair Shingle Prices

Stormy weather and our neighborhood roofs

There are a lot of storms in my area. This can sometimes translate into a couple of problem issues. The last storm that we had blow through here was pretty sever. Thankfully, no one in my neighborhood was injured. But I can’t say the same about my neighbor’s roofs. Quite a few people were in the market for low cost roof shingles for the purposes of repairing their roofs before the next storm hit. Those with metal roofs fared a bit better. Even so, there was some damage along those lines as well. No one was immune to this latest storm.

What roof materials to use?

It seemed that no matter what roof materials that were used, you weren’t safe from the effects of this storm. This is the main reason that folks out in these parts look at a roof’s durability before they look at anything else. What good is an attractive roof that has blown away clear across the county? For my own roof, I use durable shingles with the type of nails that hold down the roof as much as possible. Even so, there are times when I need to perform some repairs and that’s where the Internet comes in very handy.

Finding the right roof materials just by asking

First of all, when I first purchased my new home, I looked up what the best roof material that I could possibly use, given the weather in this part of the country. I used the information that I got online in conjunction with the information that I got first hand from the people in that area. I was certainly not shy about looking at the other homes in that location and knocking on a door in order to ask a few questions! I got a lot of useful information that way and even a few tips when it came to the local builders.

A source for quality shingles

So my new roof installation came about as a result of diligent research and my proactive approach to getting the right information before I proceeded with any expenditures. This has saved me a lot of headaches over the years. Now, I used that same wisdom when it comes to getting the best quality roofing shingles at the very best prices. Over the years, I have come across a couple of really good online dealers for items pertaining to roof repair. These guys are true professionals and know what customer service is all about. That’s what you’ll find when you shop online.

Metal Roofing Advantages

Considering all of the roofing choices

A metal roof can offer many advantages when it comes to protecting against weather elements. It can reflect the heat of the sun, which saves on your utility bills and doesn’t require a lot of fancy tools or even the need to call in some help with a building contractor in order to get started with a simple repair which will only takes a short time to fix. This is usually the reason why these roofs are so popular and  seem to sell so quickly. But everyone in the market for a metal roof needs to know how to look for a good metal roof installer.

The perfect roof installer

While there may not be such a thing as a “perfect” roof installer, you can certainly come pretty close just by taking advantage of the tools you’ll find right on your own computer. by that I mean, all the metal roofing research that you need to do can be done on the Internet. There are tons of articles that I discovered that told me everything that I needed to know about metal roofs and how to go about getting one installed. The installer that I would eventually choose was found by first asking for quotes.

Going through the quotes

After I received a number of low roof installation quotes, I  set up a list that I would use as I did some further research. That research began with a visit to several websites that I discovered that rated roofing contractors. I just matched the quotes with the comments that former customers had regarding the roofing contractors in my area. This gave me a really good idea of who I wanted to deal with and which companies that I might want to avoid.

The final roof contractor selection

In the end, the budget home contractor that I hired to do the job was one that possessed several good qualities that I was looking for. Of course, they had to be affordable. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be able to budget for the job. But they also had to be recommended by their past customers. And, finally, I had to get a good feeling about the company when I narrowed down my list and started giving the roofing contractors a call. When you put all of those things together, you come up with a good plan to make sure that you’ll be pleased with your new roof installation.

My Roof Uses the Sun!

An old conversation with a friend

A long time ago, a friend suggested to me that I could use the sun in order to cut my energy bills. At that time, I thought that was a crazy idea, since solar panels as your roofing materials was just way too expensive. But as the years went on, this began to change considerably. As a matter of fact, I was truly shocked when I saw what was being advertised online in a recent unsolicited email that I receive from time to time. I went out to the site and saw some really low prices when it came to the cost of using solar panels instead of the traditional shingles!

Comparing roof material prices from different companies

This got me very curious, so I got out my pad and paper (actually it was a writing program) that I brought up in order to start comparing installation cost. I pulled up a table that made it super easy to gt this done. Pretty soon I had a professional looking chart that anyone could take a look at and see where the real bargains were. It was actually kind of fun and  I even made a game of it.

Getting My Quotes

But finally, it came down to the nitty gritty and I needed to know the exact cost of the job. Fortunately, I had the dimensions of my home from an insurance estimate that was done a few years back, so I had a detailed description of my home, which included the roof. This formed the basis of my answers to the questions regarding the size and shape of my  roof that I could send to the roofing contractors without having them come over to my house one at a time (which would be very time consuming).

The final count down

The final part of my arrangements were made when I selected the company that I wanted to do business with. This was done through the use of an evaluation that I made  of the many customer comments that were posted by satisfied (and not so satisfied customers). I was quite able to determine the strong points an weak points of the companies that were installing solar panel roofs and I ended up calling the one that looked the best. The job that I had done was absolutely spectacular. And I save a lot of money each month on my utility bills too!

Choosing My New Home’s Roof

I was moving into a new neighborhood and I had already purchased the land to build my house on about a year ago. Over the period of the last 11 months, I’ve gone over every detail of my new home with the contractors who are carefully building my dream home. Everything needed to be perfect and I was fortunately able to spare the time to oversee everything from the foundation to the materials used for roofing. But don’t think that I’m some sort of uninformed micromanaging pain in the neck. I have a background in construction – so I know what I’m doing when it comes to building houses.

Not only that, but I knew the expert building contractor personally, since I had worked with him before. So, it was more of a joint effort than anything else and we got along just fine. For the most part, everything was pretty basic. Laying the foundation was pretty much “by the numbers” as was most everything else. However, when it came time to consider the roof, we needed to have a bit more discussion. You see, there are a lot of options when it comes to the materials that you can use when constructing a roof.

In this particular instance, my construction expertise was a bit limited since I had never specialized in home roof construction. So, the first thing that I did was to do some serious research on the subject matter. This wasn’t so tough, since I knew how to look things up online and there was plenty of reference material available. I already knew about the weather patterns in my new home’s area, so it was mostly a matter of matching up that knowledge with the qualities of different roof materials. I spent about a week doing this and I believe that it paid off.

I discovered that there was more to understanding home roofs than I had originally imagined. There were a number of nuances when it came to way that a roof was shaped in conjunction with the materials used. For example a tile roof worked better within a certain configuration that would not be suitable for a shingle roof. So I undertook the task of understanding the parts of a roof and how the materials would affect the protection that was provided. In the end, I settled on a tile roof, which was a bit more expensive. But it was certainly durable and it complimented the design of my new home.

Deciding on More Durable Roofing Materials

I was in the process of getting some roof cost estimates when a friend asked me how long did  I think my new rood would last. That got me thinking. You see, my wife and I are in our 20s and we had purchased an older home that we had decided to fix up to be like new. That had to do with the unique style of the home and the historic aspect of the neighborhood that we now lived in. The prices were high in this part of town, but some of the older homes needed some serious work.

One of the first things that we needed to do was to replace the roof with something more durable and in keeping with the budget that we set down. The style of the roof was not really an issue, since there were no regulations as to how our home should look. But we wanted something that looked nice and would last  very long time without constant repairs and upkeep. The first thing that came to my mind was a brand new metal roof. My wife agreed that this was probably the most economic and practical way to go when it came to our choosing the perfect roof materials.

A lot of people are unfamiliar with the qualities of metal roofs – except in countries, like the  Philippines, where metal roofs are the norm. That should tell you something, since the two things that define the Philippines is a concern for economics and amazingly hostile weather during the typhoon season. So, it’s common to see a Philippines metal roof. The area that I live in may not be subject to annual typhoon, but bad weather is no stranger, either. the neighbors that I spoke to had a lot to say regarding the heavy rains and the damage that they can cause to roofs.

So, the next thing that I did was to start looking for some quotes for a new durable roof.  I’m an avid fan of online shopping, so I visited a few roofing websites and began asking for low quotes. I soon had a lot of answers and that was just perfect, since now I could begin making price comparisons. Once I had accomplished this task, I looked up the companies with the lowest quotes in order to assess their reliability. Once I selected my company,  I set up an appointment and finalized the deal.

Getting Professional Roofing Cost Estimates

The last storm that we had in my area was one for the books. I guess I should consider myself lucky, since my home wasn’t destroyed like those belonging to several of my friends in town. I think that he positioning of my home when it comes to trees and other geological formations has something to do with it. Anyway, the only real damage was to the integrity of my roofing tiles. One good look at my roof and I knew that I was going to need some repair work done immediately. I knew my roof would be leaking the very next time that it rained hard.

This storm, however, taught me a valuable lesson. It just doesn’t pay to use roofing materials that aren’t as durable as you can afford them to be. This is why I decided to forgo the traditional asphalt shingles that I had been using in the past and use my insurance money to have a more durable roof installed – made of metal. Since I happen to have had a very good insurance policy, I was now able to afford the extra money that it would take in order to install a metal roof. But I didn’t know what the exact cost would be.

I had considered taking a trip over o my local home improvement center and visiting their roofing department. But I was a bit reluctant to do this since I had been noticing that the prices for their items seemed a bit high when I saw various advertising for home improvement sales on the Internet. So I decided to check out various roofing costs on some websites that advertised low roof prices. I figured that there was nothing to lose and, at the very least, I would have an idea of roof replacement costs using metal roofing.

As it turns out, I found out exactly what I needed. I was able to get several quotes based on the dimensions of my roof. These quotes were actually a lot lower than I had anticipated. I then set up a couple of appointments with different companies in order to finalize any pricing. While the price of an asphalt roof would have been cheaper, the price of a good metal roof would cost me less than a new slate roof and the durability was excellent. That was obvious to me as soon as I saw the long term warranty that came with a metal roof.

Making The Right Roofing Decisions

At first, I was at a complete loss when it came to making a final roofing decision for my new home. I had spent a lot of time on the plans for my house, which included the number and designs of the bathrooms and the layout of the kitchen. Yet, one of the most important decisions had been entire forgotten about. A decision that would mean all the difference in the world when it came to my home living experience.Of course, I’m talking about the roof that would protect my home from the harsh elements of the region that I live in.

I think that this oversight originally came about since we tend to take the roof of out home for granted. Unlike the front yard, we usually don’t get a chance to take a walk up on the roof and appreciate the workmanship and sturdy roofing materials that make up our roof. If we had a way to walk on our roof on a regular basis then maybe we would give the roof a bit more thought. As it stands, we most often only think of our roof when it starts to leak. But since I was currently building my house, I needed to make a decision soon.

So I sat down with my contractor and we began a lengthy discussion. The first consideration was the weather of the region. That made sense, since the primary function of a roof is to protect against rain, snow, wind and other factors that are associated with weather. The second consideration was the actual appearance of the house. I wanted to keep to the style of the other houses in the neighborhood, which was somewhat upscale. So inexpensive shingles would not really be appropriate. But, on the other hand, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to spend the money for the most expensive materials, either.

There had to be a compromise in there somewhere – and there was. In the end, I settled on a very nice tile roof for my new home. This complimented the design of my home and my neighbors were very happy with the color and material selection. In addition, a tile roof will last for a very long time and provide the type of weather protection that is needed in my particular area of the country. Now with all of that out of the way, I can start thinking about other things that can help with my home’s energy efficiency.

The Weather Should Decide

I was having a new home built and I wasn’t quite sue about the roofing materials that I should use. You see, I was getting a lot of input from many different sources that ranged from the contractors (I tend to trust these guys) to the folks in the neighborhood to my cousin in Detroit (I tend to trust him a bit less). Anyway, the deal is that I’m getting hit with information from all sides. It was then that I noticed something. More and more folks seemed to be using metal for their roofing material. Since metal costs more than asphalt shingles (the old standby), I wanted to know why.

So the first place that I looked up the popularity of metal when constructing a roof was on the Internet. I mean that’s where you can find information on just about anything, right? so I pulled up the old search engine and types in the keywors and started reading the articles. Much to my surprise, I learned that the cost of a roof was really more than just the initial expenditure. Of course, you have to count the dollars that you put down at the beginning, but there are other costs to consider.

For example, there’s a huge difference in the durability of a roof. And there are many small things that folks will fail to take into account. If you have a roof that is constructed with asphalt shingles, you can sometimes get a break on the cost of repairing your (like after a big storm) by replacing individual asphalt shingles where needed. Rather than having to spend a lot of money to finish a repair, you may be just looking at a few shingles and some nails. That can certainly cut the cost of a repair by a wide margin.

But a metal roof has a decided advantage in the durability department. Metal roofs are known for lasting a very long time. In many cases, we’re talking 50 years or more on the new roof warranty. This means that you’re dealing with a roof that can stand up to the weather in even the harshest environment. So, if you are building a home in an area that encounters extremes of weather, then a metal roof might be a wise choice for your home. As a matter of fact, this just so happens to be the way things are in my case. So, I guess I’m going with a metal roof.
